Competence is evaluated through multiple sources of evidence, not time alone. A supervisor can assess readiness for increased autonomy using methods such as:
- Direct observation of practice (with appropriate consent where required)
- Case review and reflective discussion focused on decision-making, ethics, and risk
- Documentation review/audits (records, assessments, plans, notes)
- Feedback over time, including whether the supervisee integrates direction and improves
- Structured evaluation against role expectations, scope, and relevant standards
This aligns with a competency-based supervision approach: the question is whether the supervisee consistently demonstrates safe, ethical, standards-aligned practice—particularly in higher-risk situations—not simply how many hours have elapsed.
