In response to the tragic incident at CFB Wainwright on October 17, 2026, the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) is implementing an expedited process for social workers registered in other jurisdictions who wish to provide social work services to individuals affected by this event through the courtesy (temporary) registry.
The courtesy registry provides a temporary, short-term registration in Alberta to provide specific social work services to Albertans in times of urgent need. Courtesy registration is not renewable but can be extended should the circumstances warrant more time to complete service delivery. Applicants applying under the courtesy registry in these circumstances will be authorized to provide social work services to Albertans via virtual or electronic platforms.
To support the efficient registration of social workers to provide virtual social work services, the ACSW will implement an expedited and modified registration process for qualified individuals registered as a social worker in good standing in another jurisdiction, and who requires temporary registration in Alberta. The following administrative documentation requirements will be waived including: a current and valid criminal record check, the regulatory verification form, and resume. Additionally, the requirement to complete the mandatory training course on sexual abuse and misconduct education for health professionals will also be waived. Associated fees will be waived.
To start the expedited and modified process, contact registration@acsw.ab.ca outlining your intention to engage in social work services, including your full name, registration number, home jurisdiction and associated college/professional regulatory body.
Once your email is received, the Registration department will email you a step-by-step guide on how to complete your expedited and modified courtesy registry application online using the registrant portal, and will support expedited verification of registration with your regulatory home jurisdiction.
Registration under the courtesy registry will remain in effect until January 31, 2027 unless otherwise revised.
